While the total number of funded vehicles hit a record high, profits fell, driven largely by the continued decline in electric vehicle (EV) residual values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on data and commentary from leasing company leaders, the report explores key trends shaping fleet strategy today: from the growing importance of salary sacrifice schemes and shifts in funding preferences, to operational challenges around <a href=\"\/en-gb\/fleet-electrification-guide\/\">EV adoption<\/a> and the vital role of the <a href=\"\/en-gb\/for-fleet-managers\/\">fleet manager<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What&#8217;s more, the average fair wear and tear charges have dropped, despite longer leases and higher mileage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ve summarised 7 key findings to highlight what fleet decision-makers need to know. Fleets hit record high<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fleetnews.co.uk\/fleet-leasing\/fn50-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FN50 leasing companies<\/a> now manage <strong>1.8 million cars and vans<\/strong> \u2013 the highest ever. Both cars and vans contributed to this growth (vans rebounded after a drop last year). Profits fell by 32% (down \u00a3645m), mainly due to falling EV residual values, despite record revenues (\u00a313.6bn).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We interviewed Simon Brown, Fleet Sales Manager at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vansdirect.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vansdirect<\/a>, to get his thoughts on how businesses are approaching fleet procurement. Simon shared that companies seem to be retaining vehicles for longer now, rather than replacing them with newer models: &#8220;The hit of maintenance costs is generally cheaper than the cost of a vehicle upgrade.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, a company\u2019s fleet is an expression of their identity, he says:<\/p>\n\n\n<section  class=\"qtx-pagebuilder-section qtx-pagebuilder-section-blockquote qtx-pagebuilder-section-blockquote-green_testimonial_with_photo \">\r\n        <div class=\"green_testimonial_with_photo \">\r\n            <div class=\"img-container\">\r\n                                <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.quartix.com\/content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Simon-Brown-Fleet-Insider-Podcast-Profile.png\"\/>\r\n                            <\/div>\r\n            <blockquote>\r\n                                                <p>\u201cIf you see a van out and about and it\u2019s got a company name on the side and it\u2019s rusty, it\u2019s scruffy\u2026 You don\u2019t look at it and think \u2013 I\u2019m going to use that company. If you\u2019ve got a nice clean van, you keep on top of your fleet\u2026 you keep your staff happy, you keep bringing in more business. I now oversee a fleet of 95 vehicles, a deliberate reduction in fleet size. Like many large companies, surplus vehicles were previously acquired, and the appointment of a Transport Manager was intended to optimise costs, gradually streamline the fleet, and ultimately save money.&#8221;<\/p>\n                <footer>\r\n                   <cite class=\"author\">Paul Mullins, Transport Manager<\/cite>\r\n                   <cite class=\"author_line_2\"><\/cite>\r\n                <\/footer>\r\n            <\/blockquote>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n        <\/section>\r\n\r\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-electrification-top-priority-with-tough-challenges\">3. Electrification: Top priority with tough challenges<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Electrification is the #1 concern for 33 of 35 FN50 companies, particularly for vans. EVs now make up 27.1% of new FN50 fleet deliveries, exceeding the 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/government-sets-out-path-to-zero-emission-vehicles-by-2035\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ZEV Mandate target<\/a> (22%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Challenges include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Public charging downtime<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>20% VAT on public charging vs. 5% at home<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of home charging options for many drivers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower-than-promised range on e-LCVs under load<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High cost and limited availability of eLCVs models<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite these, eLCVs accounted for 13.3% of new van deliveries. Still, diesel dominates with 88.5% of vans on fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Takeaway:<\/strong> Use telematics and duty cycle analysis to assess feasibility and plan gradual transitions with a <a href=\"\/en-gb\/ev-vehicle-tracking\/\">mixed-fuel fleets<\/a>. Fair wear and tear charges are falling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>New FN50 data shows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Average car wear and tear charge dropped to <strong>\u00a3368<\/strong> (from \u00a3370).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only 45% of vehicles incurred charges, down from 49% &#8211; lowest in 5 years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is despite <strong>longer leases (38 months)<\/strong> and <strong>higher mileage (47,265 miles)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Takeaway: <\/strong>Improved driver care, <a href=\"\/en-gb\/blog\/company-vehicle-safety-checks-frequency\/\">proactive maintenance<\/a>, and clearer return policies are making a difference. Reinforce <a href=\"\/en-gb\/vehicle-tracking\/driver-behaviour\/\">driver training<\/a> to reduce end-of-term costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-funding-trends-caution-and-creativity\">5. Funding trends: Caution and creativity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Operating lease (contract hire) dominates for both cars (85.8%) and vans (88.4%) due to its predictable cost and the leasing company taking RV risk.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rac.co.uk\/business\/news-advice\/advice-guides\/salary-sacrifice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Salary sacrifice<\/a> continues to grow:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Now 6.2% of car fleets, led by EV uptake<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Popular with non-essential drivers due to tax savings and flexibility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Used EVs are being offered in salary sacrifice schemes to <strong>reduce entry cost<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Takeaway: <\/strong>Offer salary sacrifice is a flexible tool to attract talent and support sustainability goals.
