{"id":41085,"date":"2020-04-01T17:00:22","date_gmt":"2020-04-01T16:00:22","guid":{"rendered":" https:\/\/www.quartix.com\/?p=41085"},"modified":"2023-05-25T15:55:17","modified_gmt":"2023-05-25T14:55:17","slug":"vehicle-tracking-driver-scores","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.quartix.com\/en-gb\/blog\/vehicle-tracking-driver-scores\/","title":{"rendered":"How does vehicle tracking calculate and use driver scores?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Every fleet manager, no matter the size of their fleet, is concerned with improving driver performance.&nbsp;Whether&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;to&nbsp;mitigate the risk of accident&nbsp;or reduce fuel costs,&nbsp;it has become the standard for fleets to&nbsp;monitor&nbsp;and&nbsp;correct&nbsp;driving behaviours.&nbsp;The data collected by a&nbsp;vehicle tracking&nbsp;system is a rich source of&nbsp;information on a&nbsp;driver\u2019s&nbsp;personal performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quartix provides&nbsp;an&nbsp;easy-to-understand, colour-coded score for each&nbsp;vehicle or driver&nbsp;in a fleet.&nbsp; This score&nbsp;features&nbsp;prominently&nbsp;in&nbsp;Quartix\u2019s driving style reports&nbsp;as a way for fleet managers to instantly recognise&nbsp;which drivers need to&nbsp;improve their skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This score is calculated by looking at&nbsp;two important areas of driver performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\" https:\/\/www.quartix.com\/content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/braking-and-acceleration.jpg\" alt=\"braking and acceleration\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Acceleration and braking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Quartix system monitors the speed of&nbsp;a&nbsp;vehicle every second. The system&nbsp;then&nbsp;calculates:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The number of times per hour that the speed changes by more than a given amount between one second and the next;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How severe the changes are;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How long the vehicle has been driving.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This calculation becomes the&nbsp;acceleration index and the braking index.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Acceleration index:<\/b>&nbsp;&nbsp;the sum of all the acceleration incidents, each multiplied by their severity and finally divided by the driving time in hours.&nbsp;Calculating it in this way means that no drivers are penalised for driving more or less than any other driver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>B<\/b><b>raking index<\/b><b>:<\/b>&nbsp; the&nbsp;sum of all braking incidents,&nbsp;worked out in a similar way, except that the levels of speed change are slightly different,&nbsp;as are the severity weightings, as excessive braking&nbsp;is considered to be&nbsp;more of a risk factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The speedometer&nbsp;pictured here&nbsp;shows the 10 levels of acceleration and braking, each level has a weighting based on its severity. For example, if the speed increases&nbsp;by 6 mph in a second, that is a level 3 acceleration. If the speed decreases by 9 mph,&nbsp;that is a level 3 braking,&nbsp;and so on.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Calculating the driver scores<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To get the&nbsp;driving style score, the Quartix system:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Adds&nbsp;up&nbsp;all&nbsp;the weighted acceleration and braking events;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Calculates&nbsp;the total driving time;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Works&nbsp;out the acceleration and braking indexes;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Averages these&nbsp;and&nbsp;subtracts&nbsp;from 100.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the&nbsp;driving style score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you have a driver with an acceleration index of 10 and a braking index of 6, the average for this driver would be 8. This drivers\u2019&nbsp;driving score would be 100&nbsp;minus&nbsp;8,&nbsp;equalling&nbsp;a score of 92.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our system calculates the driver score each day based on the amount of driving for that day or shift. We apply colours to the scores, as well, for easy identification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-green-cyan-color has-text-color\"><b>GREEN:<\/b>&nbsp;&nbsp;Scores&nbsp;greater than&nbsp;80, represent the best 30% of drivers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-luminous-vivid-orange-color has-text-color\"><b>AMBER:<\/b>&nbsp; Scores of&nbsp;50-80, represent the middle 50% of scores<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color\"><b>RED:<\/b>&nbsp;&nbsp;50 and below, represent the worst&nbsp;20%<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\" https:\/\/www.quartix.com\/content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Driver-at-wheel.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-83714\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.quartix.com\/content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Driver-at-wheel.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.quartix.com\/content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Driver-at-wheel-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.quartix.com\/content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Driver-at-wheel-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What about speed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Quartix recognises&nbsp;that the speed of a vehicle is&nbsp;important and&nbsp;exceeding the speed limit&nbsp;is a major factor in accidents and road incidents.&nbsp;But evaluating driving behaviour&nbsp;by just&nbsp;using the legal speed limit isn\u2019t&nbsp;the&nbsp;best way. Often, the safe speed for a road may be well below the legal limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is particularly true on rural roads where data shows a surprisingly high rate of fatal accidents despite very few drivers exceeding the legal limit on such roads. With a better picture of the average speed drivers&nbsp;use&nbsp;versus the&nbsp;\u2018legal\u2019 speed,&nbsp;fleet managers can coach drivers&nbsp;on safer driving,&nbsp;potentially&nbsp;saving lives and reducing loss ratios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>By measuring the speed of many thousands of vehicles over a long period, Quartix has&nbsp;designed the&nbsp;SafeSpeed&nbsp;database, made up of&nbsp;actual speeds&nbsp;recorded at&nbsp;several million locations across the country. It\u2019s a complete picture of the day\u2019s driving performance, with the ability to&nbsp;click&nbsp;and view&nbsp;on a map any&nbsp;instances&nbsp;of high speed or harsh&nbsp;braking\/acceleration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For comparing vehicles and drivers across a fleet, the <a href=\"\/en-gb\/vehicle-tracking\/driver-behaviour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">driving style<\/a> league table&nbsp;is a valuable tool&nbsp;that allows a fleet manager to easily spot&nbsp;drivers with low speed&nbsp;and driving style scores.&nbsp;Many businesses find this helpful to motivate their drivers&nbsp;into improving their driving performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith the driving style monitoring suite, we are able to identify problematic drivers and issues which need addressing.
