Whether your drivers are delivering goods or servicing at various client locations, they all share the risk that you aim to mitigate. Ensuring that your drivers <a href=\"\/en-gb\/vehicle-tracking\/safespeed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conduct these journeys safely<\/a> is not just a duty; it&#8217;s a mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s an important task to make fleet drivers safer behind the wheel. But Jason offers a different perspective as we revisit a conversation from the <a href=\"\/en-gb\/blog\/fleet-insider-episode-transport-manager-paul-mullins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">previous Fleet Insider episode<\/a>: HGVs are subject to extensive regulations that ensure the safety of both the driver and the vehicle. In contrast, light commercial vehicles (LCVs) and company cars often escape this stringent scrutiny, thus carry the most risk. Jason stresses the importance of focusing on <a href=\"\/en-gb\/blog\/vehicle-tracking-driver-scores\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">safety measures<\/a> for these vehicle types, which require far less driver training and experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cLarger vehicles have so much legislation in place for the driver \u2013 their CPCs, driver hours &#8211; and the vehicle itself undergoes strict checks. The vehicle can do more damage in a collision, but the safety measures are far greater. There isn\u2019t as much legislation involved for company cars, vans and grey fleet drivers, so this is actually where the highest risk lies. Rather than categorising your drivers as &#8220;bad,&#8221; your role is to foster a culture of self-awareness and engagement among your fleet\u2019s drivers. And providing <a href=\"\/en-gb\/blog\/telematics-data-shifts-drivers-attitudes-towards-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">constructive feedback<\/a> and support, free from judgment, can significantly alter driver behaviour. AI technology replaces the need for that manual process &#8211; it flags concerns, it identifies who requires more training, and it monitors their progress. Without this technology, you simply wouldn&#8217;t be able to do that task at scale.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The volume of data you must contend with is continually on the rise. New data sets are emerging, often accompanied by compliance regulations. Lowering speed and harsh acceleration not only impacts fuel efficiency and <a href=\"\/en-gb\/blog\/driving-styles-and-vehicle-maintenance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">maintenance costs<\/a> but also has a positive effect on insurance expenses. Moreover, safety measures contribute to <a href=\"\/en-gb\/topic\/sustainability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sustainability<\/a> efforts by reducing fuel consumption and emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Reducing overall speed by 10%, or addressing harsh acceleration, in turn improves fuel burn, battery range, maintenance costs, which all translate to cost savings.
