Fuel remains a significant operating cost for U.S. fleets. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), regular gasoline averaged $4.071 per gallon nationally for the week ending August 31, 2026, while on-highway diesel averaged $5.599 per gallon.

Those are national averages, of course, and what your business actually pays will vary by location and fuel type. But fuel price is only part of the equation. Across a busy fleet, even small amounts of unnecessary mileage can add up to significant fuel costs. Planning a more efficient route and accurately calculating trip mileage can help you get a clearer picture of those costs.

Plan the day and send the route to your driver

Add a start, a finish and up to 50 stops in between. Keep your order, or let the planner reorganize the stops for the shortest drive. If your order of stops was already the best one, it says so.

Paste a list of addresses from a spreadsheet or a job sheet instead of typing them one by one.

A more efficient route can reduce unnecessary miles, helping to cut fuel use, vehicle wear, and the overall cost of the day’s jobs.

When the route is ready, you can print it, save it as a PDF, or send it to Google Maps. If plans change during the day, update the stops and plan the route again.

Mileage claims with a route behind them

When drivers use their own vehicles for work, the mileage claim is often based on a figure they entered manually. Our free tool gives you a route to check it against.

You can build the journey in the calculator the same way you would in the planner. The distance comes from that route, and what the trip is worth at your mileage rate.

Defaults are miles, mpg, dollars per gallon, and a rate you can change. The pump price can come from the rate you actually pay.

For 2026, the IRS standard mileage rate for business use was 72.5 cents per mile from January 1 through June 30. The IRS increased the rate to 76 cents per mile from July 1 through December 31, 2026, following an increase in fuel costs. Check the published IRS standard mileage rates before setting or updating your company’s mileage reimbursement policy.

You get a claim that shows where the journey went, not only how far someone said it was. If you need business and private miles split automatically, drivers can mark trips in the Quartix mobile app.
