Operation Safe Driver Week is the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s traffic-enforcement and safe-driving awareness initiative across the United States, Canada and Mexico. During the 2026 event, July 12-18, law enforcement focused on high-risk behaviors including speeding, distraction, following too closely, improper lane changes, seat-belt violations, impaired driving and fatigued driving. The 2026 emphasis was reckless, careless and dangerous driving.

For a fleet, the campaign is useful because it creates a clear moment to talk about behavior that matters every other week too. A plumbing van, roofing truck or food-distribution vehicle may not look like a long-haul tractor, but speeding, distraction and poor following distance can still lead to citations, crashes, downtime and a difficult conversation with a customer.

Start with patterns, not isolated events

A single harsh-braking event can be defensive driving. A single speeding event can reflect a brief change in a road limit or an exceptional situation. Coaching works better when the manager looks for repeat patterns instead of treating every event as proof of unsafe driving.

That distinction also matters to drivers. A complete report should create a conversation that can be explained: how often a behavior occurs, whether it is improving and what action would make a difference. It should not feel like a list of unexplained red marks.

A four-step preparation plan for managers and drivers

1. Review the previous 30-60 days of driver behavior data and identify the fleet’s most consistent risk pattern.
2. Share the pattern with drivers using examples and context, not just a ranking. Agree on one practical behavior to improve.
3. Use the week before the campaign to confirm vehicle checks, schedules and routes are not creating avoidable pressure.
4. Measure again 30 days later. Keep the conversation going if the behavior improves, and change the intervention if it does not.

Speeding deserves more attention than a simple “slow down” message

Speeding is one of the most visible enforcement risks, but the reason it happens can vary. A driver may habitually exceed limits on familiar roads, miss a changing limit, or feel pressure to make up time after a delayed job. Those causes need different responses.

Harsh braking and acceleration: useful when you add context

Acceleration and braking data are valuable because they can reveal driving style that is hard to observe from the office. They are also easy to misuse. A driver who brakes hard to avoid a collision should not be coached as if that event were reckless.

Look for frequency, trends and combinations. Repeated sharp acceleration followed by sharp braking can suggest a different pattern from occasional braking events on a congested urban route. Discussing the route with the driver often explains what the raw score cannot.

Do not let the campaign create schedule pressure

Field-service and delivery drivers frequently work against customer windows. If a company tells drivers to be extra cautious but leaves an unrealistic route unchanged, the messages conflict. The safer operating decision may be to call the customer, reassign a stop or accept that a job will start later.
